DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

The Department of Microbiology serves as an essential bridge between basic biomedical sciences and clinical dentistry. In the BDS curriculum, the department helps students understand microorganisms, the human immune response, routes of infection, and the principles of prevention and control. This knowledge enables students to recognise the microbial basis of oral and systemic diseases and to practise dentistry with appropriate infection-control measures.

The department teaches core areas of microbiology including general bacteriology, immunology, systemic bacteriology, virology, mycology, parasitology, and applied clinical microbiology. Special emphasis is placed on oral microbiology, dental caries, periodontal infections, sterilization and disinfection, biomedical waste management, and cross-infection control in dental practice. Practical training introduces students to aseptic techniques, specimen handling, preparation of smears, Gram staining, acid-fast staining, microscopy, culture-media demonstrations, and the basic identification of medically important microorganisms.

The microbiology laboratory provides a well-illuminated and organised learning environment for demonstrations and practical work. It is supported by microscopes and essential facilities for staining, sterilization, incubation, culture demonstrations, and safe handling of clinical specimens. Through lectures, practical sessions, and laboratory demonstrations, the department develops scientific understanding, diagnostic awareness, biosafety practices, and a strong foundation for safe and effective patient care.
